Sustainability

We recognise that our operations have an effect on the local, regional and global environment. As a consequence of this we are committed to continuous improvements in environmental performance and the prevention of pollution.

We ensure our knowledge of environmentally preferable materials and systems is up to date so that good environmental design can be pragmatic and economic, and we will advise what is achievable to suit the client's aspirations and budget. We can advise on issues of sustainability and liaise with specialist consultants to ensure the most appropriate systems can be considered for any project including the use of alternative technologies such as wind power, photovoltaics, ground source heating, solar heating, biomass boliers. Moreover, we can advise as to what measures might be taken that have little or no additional cost impact such as material selection, building orientation, solar shading, natural lighting and ventilation and the economic use of ground levels.

We strive to ensure that not only are the buildings we design sustainable but that the company operates in a sustainable manor. We aim to minimise our environmental footprint with a range of initiatives;

  1. Energy
    We aim to reduce the amount of energy we use in proportion to our activities. Computers, lights, copiers and printers are switched off when not in use and heating and ventilation systems are used effectively and efficiently. Low energy lighting, draught proofing and other energy conservation measures are utilised.

  2. Office supplies
    We try to reduce the amount of office supplies we use and only buy what we really need. We look at the environmental criteria of new office supplies and the recyclability or reuse of products.

  3. Paper
    We reduce the amount of paper used in the office, and buy recycled and recyclable paper products wherever possible. We reuse paper and envelopes and recycle wherever possible.

  4. Office maintenance and cleaning
    Office cleaning and maintenance is as environmentally friendly as possible.

  5. Recycling
    All products that can be recycled are routinely collected for recycling.

  6. Transport and getting to work
    We promote environmentally friendly forms of transport wherever possible. New vehicles are assessed from an environmental perspective before purchase. Telephone conferencing and email will be used whenever possible to reduce unnecessary travel.

  7. Food
    Centrally bought food such as tea, coffee, milk etc. will only be from fair-trade sources and organic whenever possible.

  8. Purchasing Policy
    As far as possible we will purchase from companies that have a commitment to quality and environmentally friendly production systems. Preference will be given to companies that have achieved ISO 14000 quality standards, and suitable local suppliers.
